Her story "Judy's Birthday" won first prize in A Second Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul contest and was published in the book of the same name.

Ms. Schwarz has received numerous awards including the Partners in Health Award from the Combined Health Appeal of America and the Spirit of the American Woman Award from JC Penney. She has served on the Governor's Committee for People with Disabilities and the State Rehabilitation Council, Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Manufactured Housing Association's "Tomorrow's Home Foundation," and Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Wheelchair Recycling Program.

Ms. Schwarz is determined to find a solution to any problem she faces. As she states, "I don't intend to miss out on my life or the lives of my family and friends because I can't use my legs or my arms. I still see myself as a teacher and problem solver. Perhaps I can help others see challenges in their lives as obstacles along the way, not insurmountable problems."
